How to Fix a Broken Nail at Home with Gel or Builder Gel (Easy Guide)

You do not have to cut all your nails short after a break. For a small crack or chip, a little gel bridged over the split will hold it. For a deeper break, a layer of builder gel (often called BIAB) works like a flexible cast until the nail grows out. Here is how to do both at home.

Quick Answer

How to Fix a Broken Nail at Home

Small crack or chip: clean the nail, bridge the crack with a bead of gel, cure, then colour and top coat.
Deep or lifted break: cover the whole nail in a medium layer of builder gel to reinforce it, cure, then file to shape.
Either way: do not buff the crack itself, dehydrate the nail before you start, and seal the free edge.
How long it lasts: a proper repair holds until the break grows out.

Nail file (100/180 grit) and buffer. For shaping and light buffing.
Nail cleanser or isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes. To dehydrate and clean.

For small cracks: base coat, solid gel and top coat.
For deeper breaks: a builder gel such as Ambedo Fibre Fix 5-in-1.

Method 1

Fix a Small Crack with Gel Polish

  1. Prep. Clean the nail. If there is a sharp edge, carefully trim it so it does not catch and tear further.
  2. Buff around the break, not on it. Lightly buff the rest of the nail. Buffing the crack itself weakens it.
  3. Dehydrate. Wipe with cleanser or alcohol so the repair does not lift.
  4. Bridge the crack. Apply base coat and cure. Then press a small bead of solid gel over the crack so it joins both sides, smooth over the nail and cure.
  5. Finish. File any bumps, then apply colour and top coat, sealing the free edge.

Method 2

Fix a Deep Break with Builder Gel

  1. Prep. Clean, buff around the break and dehydrate, as above.
  2. Foundation. Apply a thin layer of builder gel and cure. With Fibre Fix 5-in-1 this also acts as your base coat.
  3. Build the repair. Apply a medium layer over the whole nail. Turn your finger upside down for 10 to 20 seconds so the gel settles into a smooth, strong curve over the break, then cure.
  4. Shape and finish. File to shape. Wear it clear and glossy or add colour on top.
Why builder gel for bad breaks? It is thicker and more flexible than gel polish, so it reinforces the whole nail instead of just covering the crack. New to it? Read what BIAB nails are.

Which Repair Method Should You Use?

Deep or lifted break: builder gel. It builds a strong, flexible layer over the whole nail.
Small crack or chip: gel polish. Quick and precise for a targeted fix.
Emergency, no gel at home: the tea bag method. A thin piece of tea bag glued over the crack holds it for a day or two, but it is not waterproof and will not last.
Pro Tips

Tips for a Repair That Lasts

Do not skip prep. Most repairs fail because of oil or moisture on the nail. Dehydrating is essential.
Less is more. Start with a small amount of product. You can add more, but filing away excess weakens the repair.
Seal the edge. Swipe top coat along the free edge to lock the repair in and stop lifting.

Common Questions

Broken Nail FAQs

How long does a gel or builder gel nail repair last?

A properly done repair usually lasts until the break grows out, as long as your other gel nails.

Is the tea bag method better than gel?

No. It is a quick temporary fix. It is not waterproof and lifts within a day or two. Gel and builder gel seal the break properly.

What if my nail is bleeding or very painful?

Do not put any gel on an open wound or a bleeding nail. Clean it gently, let it heal, and see a doctor if it looks infected.

Can I fix a broken natural nail without extensions?

Yes. Builder gel and gel polish both strengthen natural nails and repair breaks without tips or acrylics.

Should I cut a broken nail?

Only trim a sharp or hanging edge so it does not tear further. If the break is above the skin line, you can usually save the length with a repair.
